Tanzanite is a rare and beautiful gemstone that is found only in a small area of Tanzania, in East Africa. It is a relatively new gemstone, discovered in 1967, and is named after the country where it was first found.
Tanzanite is a variety of the mineral zoisite, and its color can range from blue to violet to purple, depending on the lighting conditions. The most valuable Tanzanite gemstones have a deep, vivid blue-violet color, which is sometimes referred to as “electric blue.”
Tanzanite is a relatively soft gemstone, with a hardness of 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, which makes it somewhat more susceptible to scratches and damage than harder gemstones like diamonds or sapphires. It is often heat-treated to enhance its color and clarity, and the heat treatment can turn brownish or yellowish stones into vivid blue or violet gems.
